Climate Change
National Climate Change Research Strategy for Primary Industries
Australia’s primary industries are developing a national research strategy to address climate change.
The Strategy for Primary Industries will:
- Map and build on existing research, development and extension activities;
- Identify key information gaps;
- Identify possible collaborations; and
- Identify successful strategies for communication and adoption of research.
A national Research Strategy will guide research to reduce the risks, maximise the opportunities for primary industries (agriculture, fisheries and forestry) and make the most of limited research funding.

Climate Change in the Australian Sugarcane Industry
This publication provides ideas on how climate change could impact on the sugar industry and how stakeholders need to be prepared for that impact right across the value chain.
Funded by SRDC and prepared by Colin Creighton, coordinator of the Rural Research and Development Corporations’ joint venture on Managing Climate Variability; and Sarah Park and
Mark Howden from CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems, the report details projections of climate change for the sugarcane industry regions, adaptation opportunities for the entire industry, and a summary of possible climate change research and development opportunities.
Copies of the report are available from SRDC by telephoning 07 3210 0495.
Managing Climate Variability
This program is managed by LWA on behalf of the program partners: Dairy Australia; DAFF; GRDC; MLA; RIRDC; SRDC; National Farmers' Federation; AWI.
Since 2003 the program has invested $7.6 million in researching climate variability; the impacts of this variability on agriculture and NRM; and how to manage these impacts.
Information on the research outcomes and tools delivered to producers through this program are available at www.managingclimate.gov.au
Climate Forecasting
This climate forecasting project was completed under the auspices of Land Water & Wool, a joint initiative between AWI, LWA and MLA.
It was desinged to assist pastoral landholders prepare for drought by studying early warning systems such as the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). It looked at the value of the SOI as a predictive tool for rainfall.
The SOI proved to be a useful tool for climate forecasting and therefore assisted with seasonal risk management in western QLD, western NSW and inland SA.
Queensland pastoralists and graziers can access the results on the Queensland Department of Primary Industries & Forestry website here.

Climate Change and Plantation Forestry
The FWPRDC is currently funding a project looking at the impacts of climate change on Australia's plantation estate.
